Speaker Series – Fatin Fatihah Zahari

When Fatin was younger, she dreamt of working alongside Steve Jobs or Bill Gates. Steve passed while I was finishing my bachelor in engineering and she was devastated. Years passed and she further her MSc in the UK, reading news about Bill and his amazing philanthropy initiatives. Working at Microsoft? She never felt that she was good enough.
Then she thought to herself while she was pregnant – gosh, I need money to pay rent and ‘think different’ to get to a huge corporate job where I can work and play. 12 months later, after getting her MSc and her son, she got the offer from Microsoft. She flew back, resigned from her old job and said to herself, “All you have to decide is what to do with the time given to you” – Gandalf. Now she is working as a Technical Account Manager and on the weekends she gets the chance to go to conferences, meeting amazing people like you!

We are all in progress towards something, no one is lagging nor too fast in their journey. You do you.

eileenlew-512x512 - Eileen Lew Eileen Lew is currently leading a team of research scientists and data engineers at Jewel Paymentech in designing intelligent systems to protect financial institutions and e-commerce marketplace from fraudulent activities. Prior to Jewel, she was the technology team lead for a genomics startup. She did her PhD in the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland in the field of brain computer interface, neurorehabilitation and cognitive neuroscience.

Topic: Financial Risk Management with Deep Learning.

The talk will walk through deep learning methods for e-payment fraud detection and as well as intelligent solutions for merchant eKYC processes.

Speaker Series – Dr Norhasliza Yusof

IMG_8201 - NORHASLIZA YUSOF Dr Norhasliza Yusof is a senior lecturer at Department of Physics, University of Malaya. She obtained her PhD in Theoretical Astrophysics under Split-Site PhD programme under University of Malaya and Keele University, UK. Her expertise is in stellar structure and evolution where it involves massive numerical and computing techniques in simulating the real-life stars.

Topic: Computational Physics with Python.

Python programming is implemented at two level of studies, at the entry level Python is introduced in the year two numerical and computational methods course. At the follow-up course in year three, Python 3 is used in solving physics problems using numerical methods. Anaconda provides excellent modules and libraries that are needed in scientific computing. The objectives are for the students to be able to write codes from scratch using numerical methods learned from the first course for example Euler Methods to solve Ordinary Differential Equations and then applied to some real physics problems using some specific techniques. Students are trained from devising the mathematical equations, turning it into a suitable algorithm and writing the program in Python language. They are also require to visualized their result using Matplotlib and test with exact values and analysed their results with appropriate error analysis.

Topic: The Rise of the Motion Controlled Robotic Arms.

This talk will aim to show a fascinating side to programming with the complement of hardware on the side; this in particular using industrial-grade robotic arms. Through programming the receiving end of the leap motion technology in Python, I will demonstrate how one will be able to receive the coordinates, transport the data to be stored in the cloud, and eventually put the coordinates out for use in the robotic arms themselves and how the arms will interpret the movement to best be followed. Through programming as the intermediary and with leap motion technology available, the coordinates in 3D space of each bone in the hand can be obtained, allowing very accurate movement of the robotic arms and the hands attached to it, particularly the fingers on the hands, to follow along with the actual movement as well. Through showing how the data can be transported, stored, and used from the cloud, the audience will also learn about the importance of the Internet of Things concept in creating systems such as this one and understand the extents of how cloud technology can best be used to support these systems. The audience will leave feeling inspired to begin their own projects within Python that relates to the Internet of Things concept, mechanised systems, and maybe even go on to build their own full-fledged Pacific Rim robots! And yes, I will be demonstrating a full-sized implementation of the programmed robotic arms and hands as well after showing how to program it.

Topic: Machine Learning with Text

It can be difficult to figure out how to work with text in scikit-learn, even if you’re already comfortable with the scikit-learn API. Many questions immediately come up: Which vectorizer should I use, and why? What’s the difference between a “fit” and a “transform”? What’s a document-term matrix, and why is it so sparse? Is it okay for my training data to have more features than observations? What’s the appropriate machine learning model to use? And so on…

In this tutorial, we’ll answer all of those questions, and more! We’ll start by walking through the vectorization process in order to understand the input and output formats. Then we’ll read a simple dataset into pandas, and immediately apply what we’ve learned about vectorization. We’ll move on to the model building process, including a discussion of which model is most appropriate for the task. We’ll evaluate our model a few different ways, and then examine the model for greater insight into how the text is influencing its predictions. Finally, we’ll practice this entire workflow on a new dataset, and end with a discussion of which parts of the process are worth tuning for improved performance.
