PyCon APAC 2017 interviews on BFM 89.9

PyCon APAC 2017 is just a month away! Ramping up to the conference, we’re working with our media partner, BFM 89.9 The Business Station, a local Malaysian terrestrial radio station to increase awareness about the conference, and also to introduce our two keynote speakers.

Jeff Sandhu producer and presenter for Tech Talk will be broadcasting interviews with our keynotes speakers and the PyCon APAC 2017 organizers:

Jessica McKellar and Luis Sanchez at 11AM MST (+8 UTC) on 3rd of August 2017 (He will start with Jessica at 11AM and move on to Luis at 1130AM) while the broadcast for the interview with the PyCon APAC 2017 organizers will be aired at 11AM MST (+8 UTC) on the 10th of August 2017.

Don’t miss it out live if you’re within the broadcast area for BFM 89.9, but if you are, you can still download the podcast after the broadcast from BFM’s site.

If you haven’t, you can get tickets to PyCon APAC 2017 here.

We would also like to thank BFM 89.9 for the opportunity and their help. They have a great team and it’s great working with them!

State of our Call For Proposals

We’re going to go through the current CfPs that we have, and write down a short summary to give you an idea of what kind of PyCon APAC you might be coming to in August.

Please keep in mind though that this post doesn’t endorse or means that PyCon APAC will accept any of the proposals we’ve received so far: That will be done by the Program Team based on the CfP schedule and will be announced on the 1st of August 2017.

Data Science and Machine Learning

Topics around Data Science and Machine Learning have the highest numbers of CfPs that we’re currently receiving. For example,

  • Using Machine Learning in Structured Finance & Insurance
  • Data Mining of News

are some of the talk title that we have received. Coupled with the fact that Wes McKinney will be keynoting for us, there seems to be a strong interest in data science and analytics this year.

Business Applications, Python Libraries and Best Practices

After Data Science, Business Applications, Python Libraries and Best Practices topics are the second highest proposals that we have received so far. Titles like

  • Write Elegant Concurrent Code in Python
  • Velocity. Agility. Python.

Many people are keen to share how that have used python to get their jobs done and how it enriched their lives.

We’re still open for CfPs, so please send in one!

PyCon APAC 2017 dates and venue announced

As initially announced here PyCon APAC 2017 will be held in Kuala Lumpur, organized by PYCON MY PLT.

We are happy and excited to announce that the dates and the venue for this year’s PyCon APAC conference are as follows:

Dates: Aug 26 (Sat) to Aug 27 (Sun) 2017
Venue: Connexion Conference & Event Centre in Bangsar South, Kuala Lumpur.

We’ll also have a one day sprint event, on Aug 25 (Fri) OR Aug 28 (Mon) 2017, depending on venue availability. This will be a separate event than the conference and we’ll update on the details of the venue nearer to the date.

The overall theme for this year’s PyCon APAC is Taming Python: Being this year’s regional PyCon conference, we hope to showcase how python is being used to solve problems unique to each locale, or how we use python to solve our many different problems.
