Development Sprint for PyCon APAC 2017

For PyCon APAC 2017, we are organizing a one day development sprint event, where developers regardless of skill level get together with project maintainers to work on open source projects.

Development sprint events are a great way for you to meet and actually work with experienced developers on interesting projects. More than often, conference development sprint events are where many new people start making their name working on open source projects. It’s a great place to start if you have ever thought of contributing to Open Source projects, but did not know where to start.

Development sprints for PyCon APAC 2017 will be held at the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology, University Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Time: 10AM to 6PM
Sprint Venue: Makmal Mikro 1, Blok A, FSKTM, University Malaya.

The sprint event is free, and you are not required to purchase a PyCon APAC 2017 ticket, but space is limited: Please be considerate to other people that really is interested to join the sprints, and only get tickets if you can confirm that you can attend the event.

The development sprint will be lead by Bhavani Shankar from Ubuntu:

Bhavani Shankar is a cerebral palsy affected guy who has around 8
years of experience in the IT industry, presently working as a senior
consultant in Accion Labs Pvt limited in an automation specialist
role.

Apart from his work at Accion Labs he is an active ubuntu community
contributor from the past 10 years in various roles from being an
active contributing member to a developer to being on the governance
councils in the ubuntu community.

Financial Aid reopened: 2 more grants

Update: With only 4 weeks away from the PyCon APAC 2017 event, we have some good news to share.

We have decided to extend the Financial Aid Program to provide RM500 for another two individuals to attend the event. Thus, we will be receiving applications to be considered for the financial aid program for the next 2 weeks. The new closing date is 8 August 2017 (12.00am).

PyCon APAC 2017 interviews on BFM 89.9

PyCon APAC 2017 is just a month away! Ramping up to the conference, we’re working with our media partner, BFM 89.9 The Business Station, a local Malaysian terrestrial radio station to increase awareness about the conference, and also to introduce our two keynote speakers.

Jeff Sandhu producer and presenter for Tech Talk will be broadcasting interviews with our keynotes speakers and the PyCon APAC 2017 organizers:

Jessica McKellar and Luis Sanchez at 11AM MST (+8 UTC) on 3rd of August 2017 (He will start with Jessica at 11AM and move on to Luis at 1130AM) while the broadcast for the interview with the PyCon APAC 2017 organizers will be aired at 11AM MST (+8 UTC) on the 10th of August 2017.

Don’t miss it out live if you’re within the broadcast area for BFM 89.9, but if you are, you can still download the podcast after the broadcast from BFM’s site.

Announcing our Financial Aid recipients

We would like PyCon to be accessible to everyone who wants to come and get involved, but one of the hurdles to accessibility is the financial burden that attending a conference imposes on attendees.
So one of the new things that we’re trying to do for PyCon APAC 2017 is to give out financial aid to selected participants. You can read more about our Financial Aid program philosophy here.

As the money that is used for the financial aid program comes from the community (ticket sales and sponsorship), we are publicly announcing the recipients of the program in this blog post:

Program Schedule for PyCon APAC 2017 Announced

We’re excited to finally announce the Program Schedule for PyCon APAC 2017.

We will have a full 2 days of conference goodness, with 15 sessions in on the first day and 13 sessions on the second day, spread between two tracks.

On the third day of the conference, we have a development sprint session scheduled, with details to be updated at a later date. If you would like to volunteer yourself and your project for the development sprint, please contact cfp@pycon.my

Automation Testing Workshop by WHC

Women Who Code, which we’re tying up with to help increase female participation and exposure to PyCon APAC 2017, will be having their next series of workshop: Python 104: Automation Testing on Sat Jul 29, 2017.
